Sessions
Sessions are limited to 4-5 participants. Completing an application does not guarantee or obligate participation. Returning artists have priority registration.
Fee for the 3-month session is $1485. Continuity and accountability are important for Anna to get well acquainted with the work and for the participants to develop a deeper understanding of their studio practice. Critique will cover 4 stages -- description, analysis (elements/ principles/ technique), interpretation, & evaluation. Feedback from peers & engagement in critical thinking is key!
The Program
Mentor For All
I mentor students and emerging artists who would like to understand how to develop their own unique vision and authentic aesthetic style based on that vision. Everyone sees the world differently. How do we understand that? By what visual means is that achieved? What is the artist trying to say as an expression of that vision? What are the most effective mediums, techniques, and materials in expression of that vision? How does one develop concepts based on visual concerns?
Evaluation
For as long as I have guided crit sessions, I have used a 4-stage evaluation process in my critiques. My goal is to have the artists understand how to think critically about their own work and also learn how to articulate that thought process in relation to other's work. I often use art historical and contemporary art references as a basis for comparison and discussion of how visual elements and conceptual concerns may relate to the mentee's work. I also provide real talk about professional practices based on my 40 years of experience as a teacher and lifetime as an artist. Recommendations for exhibits to see, relevant readings and videos are also frequently offered in support of the participant's development.
It's About You, Not Me
Getting to know you helps us understand how to most effectively help you grow. I will never impose on you my own or other artist's way of thinking and doing things. The goal of helping you achieve your own authentic voice as an artist is to know and understand who you are. I hope to listen and provide thoughtful and useful support.

Taking classes with Anna has been very important for my growth as an artist. Anna brings to the table a way of thinking that doesn’t come naturally or easily to me. I’m impulsively intuitive; Anna is intellectually intuitive. That may sound like something of an oxymoron, however, it is her foundation in the fine arts that is sorely lacking in my universe. Anna is gently guiding me towards a more creatively analytical way of approaching my work. This planning and forethought is causing growth and a rise in confidence for me and my capabilities as a painter.
Anna is incredibly supportive. She believes in me and my work and validates my intuitive way of working while also guiding me on a larger path towards my ultimate potential. She sees and hears me clearly and supports my personal choices while showing me an expansive horizon of new and exciting choices.

I’ve always been impressed by Anna's enthusiasm for painting (of all sorts) and the overall positive nature of what she has to say. She takes everyone’s efforts seriously. Plus, Anna comments not just on the results (is that drawn correctly? Is that the right color?) but on technical aspects (that part looks underpainted; I don’t care what that is, the painting is terrific). That’s very empowering. It moves the comments away from being a judgment of one’s taste etc. to practical things that a person can address.
I sometimes joke with my husband (a golfer) that painting is like golf—some days you have the magic, sometimes not, but the more you do it, the better the chances of making the magic happen. And maybe teaching painting is like teaching golf in some ways? Anna, the pro, assesses where people are in their progress as a golfer/artist and gives feedback at a level that they can reach without making them totally relearn how to swing a golf club/conceptualize their art.
It’s also great the way she can summon up artists that a person should look at. That not only helps a person to frame their work “within the scope of contemporary concerns” but also within the scope of all art, which is an empowering perspective.

Anna Patalano is a highly gifted, educated and knowledgeable teacher. She has a wonderful rapport with people of all skill levels, varied backgrounds and temperaments. She navigates her students to acquire the skills needed to flourish as artists within their own personal visions and styles.
She teaches new artists the concepts and key basics that will benefit them to reach their full potential. She challenges established artists to try new techniques and achieve far more advanced levels.
Although a highly accomplished artist herself, her ability to connect with her students, access the best way to work with their personalities all the while letting them embrace their own style of painting and not teaching them to replicate her style makes her an outstanding teacher. It is evident that Anna loves what she does and gets tremendous joy watching her students advance without taking any of the credit for her students’ accomplishments. As her student for over 10 years, it is with great pleasure that I share my firsthand knowledge of Anna as a teacher.
